User-centred web interface design — Creating user-friendly web sites

Participants will learn how user-centred activities can be integrated into web development projects. They will gain an understanding of key considerations in gathering user requirements, designing and evaluating for ease of use, as well as obtain knowledge of practical tools and methods in the area of web usability.

Origins
Originally held as a half-day tutorials at two previous STIMDI conferences in Sweden. It has since been revised and expanded to a 1 day tutorial.

Audience
This tutorial is especially appropriate for developers, user interface designers, and project managers seeking a broad, methods-oriented introduction to user-centred design and evaluation. It is also of interest for others working in the HCI field.

Presentation
The seminar follows a user-centred design process and is illustrated with case studies throughout. The day includes several short interactive sessions as well as slightly longer exercises during the breaks.

Biographies
Nigel Claridge is senior partner and co-founder of Nomos, a leading European usability consultancy company. He has been working as a consultant to the IT and telecommunications industry since 1978, and specialises in the application of human factors to product and system development.

Richard Whitehand is a senior usability specialist at Nomos. Since joining Nomos in 1995 he has worked with the user-centred design and evaluation of a wide variety of Swedish and international web sites and web-based applications.
